Linux: this new....thing:

You've probably herd of Linux by now, if you haven't then, well don't worry too much, its not taking over the world yet!

Linux is a new operating system, well, to be fair its not really that new. Linux is based on the UNIX operating system. The only OS you may come into contact with is usually some form of Windows. That makes sense because Linux\UNIX are server based operating system.

Companies have been using UNIX for years now, in fact, almost every server that hosts major websites or ISP's use UNIX. It was not designed for the home or office user.

However, when Linux came out, it have something that UNIX didn't. Pictures!! Linux was still created to replace UNIX but many home users got a hold of this new system, and because it had a graphical user interface (GUI), people found it easy to adjust to, but not many knew of its power.

Linux basics:

There are differences to Linux and UNIX, that's why not all systems have changed over, plus, people with good Linux skills are hard to find but people with UNIX skills were quite common. Companies, however got hold of the fact that the public were getting Linux., so they started marketing it. Many distributions of Linux came out, and this confused people into which version of Linux is really Linux!

So who owns Linux?

You do! well, your copy of it, Linux is a registered trademark of Linus Torvalds. The head chief cheese guy who made Linux. He is a single man and worked for no major company when creating it. The idea of Linux is free software, unfortunately, this word scares most people.

Another common question is 'I've heard Linux is free, so why is it £39.99 in the shop?'. This is because the shops sell distributed versions of Linux. That is, a company has gone through the trouble of packing it all into CD's, writing manuals, and providing installation support, so you are really paying for the service, not the product. But the fact is, weather you download it or buy it, you are getting the same system.

Anyway, this page contains link to loads of sections covering different parts of Linux, since I'm working on the content and not the design, please bear with it!
