Removing Little white shortcut Arrows | Windows 95/98 |
If you get fed up with those little white shortcut arrows, then there is a way to remove them (although you might forget what is a shortcut and what isn't) If you have a win95/98 CD (not second edition) then under the power toys folder, you can find TweakUI, a tool that tweaks Windows. or you can do it the old fashioned way. Go to run and type REGEDIT. search for IsSHORTCUT and delete all instances of it. This may not be the best way because you have to modify the registry. You can download TweakUI from the Microsoft website. |
Writing your own system properties | Windows 95/98 |
When you right-click 'My Computer' you will see the system information window. If you want to change some of this information, then you can! You can change the last section and add a picture by adding some text files to your system directory. Create a .inf file and save it as OEMINFO.INF in the system directory, do the same for a bitmap, it will have to be a small one because you only get a little space. save your bitmap in the system directory named OEMLOGO.bmp. Changing Icons | Windows 95/98 |
If you want to change an icon for a folder, you can find many in your windows directory. you can only change the icons to shortcuts so I create a shortcut in the same directory and hide the original folder. then right click the new shortcut and select Change Icon. from here you can check DLL and EXE files for other icons. |
TClock & TClock Add-On | Windows 95/98 |
If you want to make people think you have a different version of Windows, TClock is great! This program can change the blue Windows 98 Logo down the side of the start menu or change the start button. You can download this program from my Downloads page. Click here to see information about it. |
REGEDIT & Sysedit | Windows 95/98 |
In Windows, there are two good little utilities called sysedit (System Configuration Utility) and REGEDIT (registry Editor). Go to RUN in the start menu and type sysedit or REGEDIT. this brings up the program. REGEDIT is your computers Registry. this is a big collection of settings. Sysedit is a program that calls your system files. From here you can edit the system files such as Config.sys and Autoexec.bat. |
Winipcfg & Telnet | Windows 95/98 |
Winipcfg is a utility in Windows that reports your IP Configuration. type Winipcfg in the run menu and this will reveal your settings. Telnet is a program that links to remote terminals. from here you can enter a computer name or IP address to gain access. |
TweakUI | Windows 95/98 |
This program ships on the Windows CD (except Windows 98 Second Edition) it 'tweaks' windows o the way you like it. It allows you to alter settings such as animation, the clock layout and security settings. It is available to download from Microsoft but is quite hard to find. |
Browsing using your Browser | Windows 95/98 |
If you use Netscape or Internet Explorer, type in c:\ or any directory and it will display your computers contents. |
Reducing startup time | Windows 95/98 |
If your system takes ages to load up, Look in your startup folder in Programs of the start menu. This contains all the programs that Windows loads up. if you remove some of these like Microsoft Office or Lotus. |
Windows startup Menu | Windows 95/98 |
Windows 95/98 has a startup menu which allows you to enter safe mode, enter the command prompt or step through your startup process. For Windows 95, press F8 when the 'Starting Windows 95' screen appears. For Windows 98, press CTRL when 'Starting Windows 98'. |
My Computer on the start menu | Windows 95/98 |
I sometimes find it useful to have a shortcut to my computer on the start menu. This way, if you have loads of Windows open and you can't find the desktop, it's always there. Just right-click on the taskbar and select Properties. Click the Start Menu tab along the top and select Advanced. From here you can drag the My Computer icon next to the Program icon. This will put a My computer Icon at the very top of the Start Menu. All you have to do is rename it to My Computer and you have a good little shortcut. |
Your own restart Icon | Windows 95/98 |
If you want a shortcut to
restarting your system, you can create a BAT (batch) file that does just
that. Open Notepad and type (including the brackets):
(@exit) Save the line as something like restart.bat but remember to give it a .BAT extension. Save it in the root directory like C:\ or Windows. After the Icon appears, left click the file and select program tab. Click the Advanced button to display the options and uncheck the 'suggest MS-DOS mode as necessary'. Check the one directly below and uncheck Warn before entering MS-DOS. |
See your Computers Hardware | Windows 95/98 |
If you get fed up with the Device
manager, there is a better way to view all your computers information!
This command lists all the hardware and there registry keys as well as
driver information. To do this type
"hwinfo /ui" at the Run prompt on the Start menu. |
Quick Reboot | Windows 95/98 |
When you need to restart your computer, you can make the process much quicker by holding down Shift when you click OK to restart your system. |
Keeping up performance | Windows 95/98 |
Running regular maintenance on your computer helps it to perform better. Things like Scandisk, Defrag and Disk Cleanup help a great deal. If you have any of the Norton or Macafee software then running checks like Win doctor and System Check help as well. |
Outlook of space | Windows 95/98 |
If you have been experimenting with different Internet service providers then they all want to get hold of your computer. This can be very annoying on Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express because you can be checking about 50 different accounts. In Outlook, go to Tools - Accounts and then select the Mail tab, you can delete all the services you don't use except your default mail account. This way, Outlook will run faster and you will receive mail quicker. |
Office trick 97 - part 1 | Windows 95/98 |
This trick is for Microsoft Word 97 only. You must do the following events in order or this will not work. First open a new Word Document and type 'Blue' (Capitol B and no commas). Select Format then Font and change the colour to blue and select BOLD. Next go to Help, then About Microsoft Word. Hold down CTRL & SHIFT while single clicking the Word Logo and you will discover a hidden game of Pinball! |
Office trick 97 - part 2 | Windows 95/98 |
This trick is for Microsoft Excel 97 only. As above, do this is this order and you will find a great game of...am...flight sim 3000??? Open a new Sheet and press F5. This opens the go to dialog box. type in (minus the little marks, 'x97:l97' and press return. Now hit TAB once and hold down CTRL & SHIFT while clicking the Chart speed button. |
Fast website access | Windows 95/98 |
If you want to quickly want to jump to a web site, just go to Run in the start menu and type in the address of the site, your default browser will load up and connect, and there it is! |
Network Properties | Windows 95/98 |
To quickly access your network properties, right-click on Network neighborhood, and select Properties. This will open the network window as in control panel. |
Multiple users | Windows 95/98 |
If you use a family PC, you can create your own environment. Go to Control Panel and select Passwords. In the User Profiles tab, check Users can customize their preferences and desktop settings. You can then check the other two if you wish. When you restart, type in a new username and password unique to your self and you are logged into your section of the computer. To create another user, just go to Start, Log off... and type in a new user and password. Depending on what you checked in the password options, changing the start menu and desktop icons will remain the same on other users environment. |
DOS commands | Windows 95/98 |

DOS (yeah, right!) Here are some commands that come in handy:
dir /p - This will display the contents of the current directory, allowing you to press any key after each section del [path] [filename] - Deletes a file from disk, e.g. del C:\Windows\Desktop\hello.txt md [folder name] - Creates a new folder in the current directory. edit [path] [filename] - Edits a file using an old old notepad program. e.g. edit c:\windows\autoexec.bat copy [path] [filename] [folder] - Copies a file to a new location. e.g. copy c:\windows\config.sys c:\windows exit - Gets you the hell out of DOS!!! |
Changing registered name | Windows 95/98 |
When you right-click My Computer, you are presented with the details. You can easily change the name your computer is registered to by selecting start > run > type regedit. navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version. In here you will see general details about windows. Under the key named RegisteredOwner you can change your name, and the system properties will change as well. |
Microsoft Excel 2000 cheat | Windows 95/98 |
MS Excel has a little cheat programmed into it like the older versions. Start a new workbook and go to File - Save As. Select the save as type box and select Web page. Then a publish button appears, click on the publish button. In the next window check the box labeled Add interactivity with. Then click publish. Next, open Internet Explorer (has to be IE) and open the file you saved, most likely book1 in My Documents. Then you are presented with a spreadsheet in IE. Now comes the horrible bit. You have to scroll down to 2000 using the keyboard. Press the down key until you reach it. Then when at 2000, you have to use he keyboard to go to WC along. When you get to 2000 - WC, click on the 2000 to select the row. Press TAB 5 times to select WC. Next hold down Shift, Ctrl, Alt and single click the little office logo in the left hand corner of the spread sheet. Then sit back and enjoy! |
Speed up the CD\DVD Drive | Windows 95/98 |
If your CD\DVD drive supports DMA mode, along with your motherboard and IDE drivers, you can greatly enhance your CD speed. right-click My Computer and select properties. double click your CD drive icon and double click your CD drive underneath it. This will display the CD drive properties. check you see if you have a DMA mode checkbox. if you do then check it and restart. This will improve performance. If you do not have this option then your CD drive\Drivers do not support it. |
Improving Performance | Windows 95/98 |
To keep your computer running at the best possible speed and performance, run regular checks using the Windows maintenance wizard. Defrag every month to keep your hard disk healthy and run Disk Cleanup every now and then to! |
Improving Performance part 2 | Windows 95/98 |
If you have a large hard disk capacity, check to see if you are using FAT32. Go into My Computer and right click on your C:\ icon. select properties, you are presented with a pie chart. Under the white text box, you'll see a File system label, if it says FAT16 or something else, your loosing a lot of hard disk space. Upgrade it to FAT32 by selecting the Drive converter utility in the system tools menu under accessories. |
Bypassing the recycle bin | Windows 95/98 |
If you want to delete a file straight from your computer, you can avoid the recycle bin altogether. Simply select the file, and press shift + delete. This way the file will be removed straight away. |
Opening Windows | Windows 95/98 |
If you open all your files in the same window, you can hold down CTRL while double-clicking a file, this will open the contents in a new window. |
Faster CD drive access part 1 | Windows 95/98 |
If you want a faster CD\DVD drive, then right-click 'My Computer' and select properties. Select the performance tab along the top and click the File System button. Under the tab labeled CD-ROM, select your speed CD drive and move the slider all the way to the top. |
Faster CD drive access part 2 | Windows 95/98 |
To speed up your drive some more, check which IDE port you CD drive is connected to, you'll need to open up your PC to do this. Make sure it is connected to Primary Slave, with your C drive connected to Primary Master. If your CD Drive is connected to one of the secondary ports, you may be loosing a lot of speed. |
